3D modeling work

About: These models were created for a resiratory care class. The models were intended to be used in a web-based interactive module to teach anatomy and physiology of respiration. The models are also used in a virtual reality experience, where students get to simulate movement through the airway, micmicking a bronchoscopy pathway.

Role: Texturing and modeling

Target audience: MS in Respiratory Care students

Software: Substance Designer & Painter, Zbrush, Maya

Format: Models to be used for web and VR applications

The airway model is bi-layered, with an inner and outer lining, The inner lining shows the mucosa of the trachea and the outer lining shows fibrous connections between the cartilage rings. The outer layer ends at the level of the bronchioles to optimize polygon count as the bronchoscopy simulation ended at that level for the purpose of the class.

The pharynx and inner lining of the trachea is textured in detail with the vocal chords and muscles of the trachea visible. This enables students to effectively position themselves within the airway during a bronchoscopy simulation.

The skeletal system with the ribcage was also modeled. Textures for the vertebrae and ribs were generated procedurally in Substance Painter using position, ambient occlusion and curvature maps.
